Royal Welsh Winter Fair 29/30 November 2010

The Llanwenog is known to be a hardy sheep but the showmen must get recognition, too, braving the -17 degree temperatures recorded nr. Builth Wells at the weekend and only one working tap on the whole showground

7 pairs of Llanwenog Butchers Lambs were presented in the Pure Lowland Breeds Section class 82. Official show results can be found here http://www.rwas.co.uk/en/winter-fair/online-results?PHPSESSID=f12cb91f4fdf34a9793bf752402b9278.

For the second year running, the first prize went to Arfon Williams, Pentre flock.

Rare breeds sale at York Auction Centre 1st October 2010
The Rare Breed Survival Trust arranged for each breed to be judged separately followed by an Interbreed show. Incredibly, for the second year running, a Llanwenog was awarded Supreme Champion, this year with a Yearling Ram bred by Philip Hodges, Charndon.

There were single entries in the Older Ewe, Ram and Ram Lamb classes. Three Yearling Ewes were shown; Mrs Titley was placed first with Philip Hodges 2nd and 3rd.

Okehampton Show 12 August 2010

It is great to be able to promote the commercial merits of the Llanwenog and what better way than to announce that Lawrence Jones had a great result in the Butchers Lambs class at this show. He was 1st in class with his pair of under 38kgs Beltex x Llanwenog ewe lambs. Then he was judged overall champion against the over 38kgs cross lambs. Full show results can be found at this link - see page 8

Royal Berkshire Show at Newbury 19 September 2010

The Hill and Heath Class was packed with Herdwicks, Norfolk Horns, Kerry Hills, Black Welsh Mountains & Hill Radnors, so Charles Horton’s Llanwenog Yearling Ewe did well to come first in the Ewe class and went on to be selected Reserve Champion for the section. His Ewe Lamb and Ram Lamb came third in their classes. Full results of the Royal Berkshire can be found at this link

Monmouth Show 26 August 2010

This is the largest one day show in Wales with an impressive display of livestock. For the first time Llanwenogs had their own classes and in spite of miserable weather, the damp sheep and exhibitors made the most of it.

The Champion Ram (Alltgoch 4yr old exhibited by Huw Jenkins, Gwynfaen) went into the last 6 of the interbreed competition. The Female Champion (Ffarm Fach Yearling Ewe presented by Huw Jenkins, Gwynfaen) was sold at Llanybydder a few days later for the day’s top price of Guins 165.

The results can be found in the attachment below.

Three Counties Show at Malvern

19 June 2010 Saturday

Llanwenogs were eligible for the Any Other Native Sheep Group which unfortunately included a Teeswater which went on to win the Supreme Championship and large classes of up to 14 entries. That said, the quality of the Llanwenog entries was recognised. In particular Philip Hodges’ Yearling Ram and May Clegg’s Yearling Ewe were judged Champion pair for the Other Native sheep section. The yearling Ram was awarded 1st in its class and was selected as section Reserve Champion. In the other classes May Clegg’s senior Ram came 4th, her Ram Lambs were 1st and 4th and both her senior and yearling ewes were 2nd.

The results can be found as an attachment at the bottom of this web page.

20th June Sunday: National Rare and Minority Breeds Show:

This is the only show in England to run Llanwenog classes and there was a good turn out with up to 8 entries per class.  The results can be found in the attachment below.
3 Counties (Sun) - Champion Llanwenog: Yearling Ewe

Bath & West Show at Shepton Mallet 5 June 2010:

At this show, the Llanwenog was shown in the Heath, Hill & Upland Breeds section alongside the Exmoor Horn, Norfolk Horn and Whitefaced Woodland.

It was a good day for the breed with the Llanwenog being awarded Section Champion (Charles Horton, Nell Flock with a home bred Yearling Ewe) and Reserve Champion (Jill Bennett, Tallantire Flock with a Charndon Bred Yearling Ram).

In addition the Llanwenog  took the top spots for all the individual classes: the Ram (any age), Ewe and her Lamb(s), Shearling Ewe and Wool on the Hoof.

To top it all, Charles' Yearling Ewe went on to achieve Reserve for the Interbreed Championship. Quite a result.

Small Holders Show at Builth Wells 16 May 2010:

This was a mixed class with Llanwenogs competing mostly with Dorset Down & Norfolk Horn.  The Llanwenog was placed first in the senior ram, shearling ram, shearling ewe and best group of three classes.  The Shearling Ram was awarded Reserve Champion for the Rare Breeds - Close Wool Section.

Of particular note was the Senior Ram class which was won by a Nell home bred ram owned and presented by Gareth Evans, Parc-y-rhos Flock.
